Guatemala commemorates 80 years of the 1944 Revolution

Guatemala is marking the anniversary of the October 20, 1944, civic-military movement that ended decades of dictatorship and initiated a period of democratic transformation. The revolution, which saw the leadership of Juan José Arévalo and later Jacobo Árbenz, sought to restructure the relationship between the state and society through significant social reforms.

Key achievements stemming from this era include the establishment of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) via Decree 295 in 1946, the implementation of a Labor Code, the abolition of forced labor, and the expansion of educational and university autonomy. Representatives of the IGSS noted that the institution continues to provide essential coverage for occupational risks, illness, maternity, and old age.

The commemorations occur amidst national mourning following the assassination of former prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa. The killing led the Ministry of Culture to suspend official scheduled concerts and shifted the focus of public demonstrations toward demands for justice.
