Guatemala Congress debates extending vehicle circulation tax deadline
Guatemala's President of Congress, Luis Contreras, indicated that a proposal could push the vehicle circulation tax payment deadline from 31 July 2026 to December 2026 as a measure to ease the impact of rising fuel costs on families. Two pending bills from the parliamentary benches – Todos, presented by Deputy Byron Rodríguez, seeks a November 2026 deadline, while Vamos, backed by Deputy Cornelio García, calls for a 31 December 2026 deadline and a suspension of fines, surcharges and interest.
Both initiatives remain under discussion and have not yet been approved by the full Congress, so the current legal deadline of 31 July 2026 stays in force. Lawmakers plan to bring the proposals to a plenary session in the coming days, hoping to reach a consensus before the existing deadline expires.
