Guatemala Congress renews insurance policy for officials
The Guatemalan Congress has renewed a collective insurance policy for its 160 deputies, 24 directors, and subdirectors for an additional two years. The policy, contracted with Crédito Hipotecario Nacional (CHN) at a cost of Q15.8 million, maintains the same conditions as the previous agreement signed in 2022.
The coverage includes hospital care for emergencies both within Guatemala and across Central America, medical consultations, ophthalmological, dental, and dermatological services, and air ambulance transfers. Additionally, the policy provides maternity coverage for female beneficiaries and medical control for their children until age six. In the event of accidental death, the life insurance indemnity can reach up to Q1.5 million.
Congress President Luis Contreras defended the necessity of the private policy, stating that all employees should have insurance and noting that the Organic Law of the Legislative Branch mandates such coverage. While some legislators utilize the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS), the private policy remains an option. The 2026 budget already contemplates Q10.2 million for a collective policy covering officials and the institutional vehicle fleet.
