Guatemala Constitutional Court confirms house arrest for journalist José Rubén Zamora

Guatemala’s Constitutional Court has confirmed the house arrest of journalist José Rubén Zamora after accepting a second withdrawal of an appeal by the Public Ministry (MP). The MP had previously sought to revoke the substitute measures that allowed Zamora to remain free during his legal proceedings.

This ruling pertains to a second case against Zamora involving allegations of conspiracy to obstruct justice and the continuous use of falsified documents. With the court accepting the MP's withdrawal, the previous decision granting him substitute measures is now final and cannot be appealed again regarding this specific action.

Zamora, the founder of El Periódico, has been under house arrest since February after being released from the Mariscal Zavala military prison. His legal situation remains ongoing, and the Second Criminal Court is expected to set a date for an intermediate stage hearing to determine if he will face trial.
