Guatemala Constitutional Court suspends Jonathan Menkos from Banguat presidency
The Constitutional Court of Guatemala has issued a provisional injunction suspending the appointment of Jonathan Menkos Zeissig as president of the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) and the Monetary Board. The ruling, prompted by legal actions from the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial, and Financial Associations (Cacif) and Deputy Allan Rodríguez, effectively nullifies Menkos's administrative, organizational, and labor actions since he took office on October 1.
A central issue in the legal challenge is the incompatibility of Menkos's role as a deputy while assuming leadership at the central bank. While the Executive branch previously argued his legislative leave remained valid, the court's decision halts his management pending a final resolution. José Alfredo Blanco is expected to serve as interim president.
Following the suspension, the Public Ministry (MP) reported that Menkos faces three criminal complaints. These include allegations of abuse of authority and failure to fulfill duties, filed by Deputy Allan Rodríguez and Yulma López España. The MP noted these complaints are currently under evaluation and have not yet been assigned to specific prosecutors. President Bernardo Arévalo has stated the government will comply with the court's ruling while evaluating its scope.
