Guatemala economy shows resilience with 4.4% growth in first half of 2026
Guatemala's economy demonstrated resilience in the first half of 2026, with the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) reporting a 4.4% cumulative growth. The Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) has maintained its GDP growth forecast of 4.1% for 2026 and 4.0% for 2027, noting that while external uncertainties such as conflicts in the Middle East exist, their domestic impact is often delayed.
Export data shows a 5% increase through June, adding 405 million dollars compared to the same period in 2025. Non-traditional products drove much of this growth, accounting for nearly three-quarters of total export value. Significant increases were seen in edible fats and oils—specifically crude palm oil, which rose 82%—as well as iron, steel, pharmaceuticals, and clothing.
Traditional exports also grew by 3%, led by coffee, cardamom, and bananas, though sugar exports saw a 13% decline. The Guatemalan Exporters Association noted that improving infrastructure, energy costs, and administrative efficiency could further boost competitiveness and investment.
