Guatemala Forum Urges Congress to Pass Anti‑Money Laundering Law

A coalition of 14 Guatemalan institutions, known as Forum Guatemala, has called on the national Congress to approve Initiative 6593 – a comprehensive anti‑money laundering and terrorism‑financing law. The group says the legislation would update the country’s legal framework to meet the standards of the Financial Action Task Force regional body (GAFILAT), strengthen state capacity to combat illicit funds, and preserve confidence in the financial system.

President Bernardo Arévalo has also urged legislators to act quickly, noting that the law is essential for fighting organized crime, corruption, and protecting Guatemalan families. Forum members warned that without the update, financial, commercial and governance risks could rise. Parliamentary leaders indicated a possible vote on the measure in early June.
