Guatemala highways see fatal accidents and hazardous road conditions

Fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists have been reported on the CA-2 highway in the Retalhuleu department of Guatemala. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, water accumulation on the asphalt, and reduced visibility, have significantly increased the risk for drivers. Authorities have noted that high speeds and lack of tire traction are contributing factors to these collisions and skids.

In the Escuintla region, specifically on the stretch of the CA-02 highway between kilometers 61 and 89, motorists face high risks due to inadequate road signaling during ongoing rehabilitation works. The company Construcciones Integrales Avanzadas (CIANSA) is currently under contract to rehabilitate the section from kilometer 61 to 81. However, reports indicate a lack of horizontal and vertical signaling, as well as missing safety barriers in curves. In several sections, such as near the Nahualate bridge, new asphalt has only been applied to one direction of travel, leaving the opposing lanes with old pavement or milled surfaces, creating hazardous conditions for heavy cargo transport and local commuters.
