Guatemala and Honduras eradicate over 500,000 coca plants

Guatemala’s Ministry of Governance announced that security forces destroyed more than 14,000 coca shrubs in the mountainous area of Santa Rosita, El Chal, Petén. The operation was part of an inter‑agency effort targeting drug cultivation near the porous border with Mexico, where coca is grown for export to the United States.

In Honduras, the armed forces reported the destruction of over 500,000 coca bushes and the seizure of eight small‑scale narco‑laboratories during the first five months of 2026. The raids covered the departments of Colón, Yoro, Olancho, Santa Bárbara and El Paraíso, aiming to curb the use of Honduran territory for cocaine production and trafficking.

Both countries said the actions are coordinated with national security agencies and international partners to weaken drug‑cartel finances and reduce the environmental and social impact of illicit cultivation.
