Guatemala inaugurates Roosevelt Avenue overpass after delays

The Guatemalan government has inaugurated the new Roosevelt Avenue overpass, a critical infrastructure project connecting Zone 7 and Zone 11 in Guatemala City. The structure spans approximately 402 to 410 meters, crossing San Juan and Roosevelt avenues from 7th Avenue in Zone 7 to 9th Avenue in Zone 11.

The project, which began in May 2022, faced significant delays and cost increases. Originally awarded to the company CEBCO for approximately Q44.96 million, the final cost rose to Q53.91 million, an increase of nearly Q9 million. Delays were attributed to unforeseen underground infrastructure, such as a collector not identified in initial feasibility studies, which led to periods where work was paralyzed.

Due to these delays, the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) and the Social Solidarity Fund (FSS) imposed fines on the responsible company. The contractor is expected to pay approximately Q4.3 million for accumulated delays. The new overpass is intended to improve connectivity for drivers from Zones 3, 7, 8, and 11, as well as those using the Periférico and Aguilar Batres highway.
