Guatemala police officers arrested over Choc Toz detention irregularities

Seven members of the National Civil Police (PNC) have been handed over to the courts following investigations into irregularities during the detention of brothers Rigoberto and Daniel Zaqueo Choc Toz. The group includes a commissioner, an inspector, an officer, and four agents.

The investigation stems from the October 17 killings of lawyer Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa and judoka Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro in Guatemala City. Authorities noted that during the Choc Toz brothers' arrest, the detainees were taken to a police sub-station instead of the Court Tower, violating established procedures.

Additional irregularities reported by the PNC include unauthorized transfers between patrol vehicles and uncommunicated route changes that bypassed the chain of command. The Choc Toz brothers, who were initially suspected of involvement in the murders, were later released after a judge found a lack of merit in the case. Their motorcycle, which had been seized by police, was recently returned to them.
