Guatemala mourns former Constitutional Court magistrate Rodolfo Rohrmoser

Rodolfo Rohrmoser Valdeavellano, a former president and magistrate of Guatemala's Constitutional Court, died on 7 August at the age of 87. He was a leading figure in the 1993 decision that declared President Jorge Serrano Elías' self‑coup, known as the Serranazo, unconstitutional and helped restore democratic order.

Rohrmoser’s six‑decade career also included diplomatic posts, teaching, and legal analysis. In May 2025, President Bernardo Arévalo awarded him the Order of the Quetzal for his role in defending the Constitution during the 1993 crisis. His death marks the passing of one of the country’s most influential jurists.
