Guatemala police investigate alleged ammunition theft and gang sales

Guatemalan authorities are investigating the alleged theft and illegal sale of ammunition by members of the National Civil Police (PNC). The investigation follows reports that officers were supplying projectiles to gangs, including Barrio 18, Mara Salvatrucha, and Los Caradura.

In coordination with the PNC Inspectorate General, officials conducted 10 raids across various departments. These operations resulted in the seizure of drugs, firearms, exclusive military-grade ammunition, electronic devices, and cash. Seven police agents have been detained on preliminary charges of illegal sale of weapons and ammunition, embezzlement by subtraction, and illicit association.

Interior Minister Marco Villeda stated that internal evaluations will continue to purge corruption within the institution, emphasizing that no involved agents will be shielded. This investigation comes amid concerns regarding illegal arms in the country; reports indicate that approximately 800,000 to 900,000 illegal weapons may currently be in circulation in Guatemala.
