Guatemala President presents Metroriel project roadmap
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has presented the results of the first phase and the strategic roadmap for the Metroriel project. Described as the most ambitious urban mobility initiative in the country's history, the project aims to create a multimodal transport network connecting Guatemala City and its surrounding municipalities with bus lines, Transmetro, and cycling paths.
The project is supported by a government-to-government agreement signed in July with the United Kingdom. Following this agreement, a British technical team worked with Ferrocarriles de Guatemala (FEGUA) to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic during the project's Phase 0. The Guatemalan Congress has approved the Special Law for the Metroriel Project (Decree 24-2026), which provides FEGUA with the legal framework to contract services under international standards with specialized technical accompaniment and oversight from the Comptroller General of Accounts.
Arévalo stated that the system is designed to address projected population growth of 40% over the next 20 years. The initiative aims to significantly reduce travel times, potentially saving commuters between 30 and 90 minutes per trip.
