Guatemala proposes record Q192 billion budget for 2027
The government of President Bernardo Arévalo has submitted a budget proposal for 2027 to the Guatemalan Congress, totaling Q192,045.1 million. This represents a 13.8% increase over the current budget, marking the largest budget in the country's history for the fourth consecutive year.
A significant portion of the proposed increase is directed toward debt service and Treasury obligations. Specifically, public debt service is projected to rise by 15.1% to Q24,601.1 million, while Treasury obligations are expected to increase by 20.1% to Q74,192.6 million. In contrast, the Ministry of Communications, responsible for roads and bridges, is slated for a minimal increase of only 0.3%.
The executive branch anticipates that this budget will drive economic growth to 4.0% next year. Key areas of intended investment include the modernization of Puerto Quetzal, priority road projects, housing, transportation, airports, and technological innovation. The largest ministerial allocations are expected for Education, Health, Governance, and Development. Congress must approve the budget by November 30; otherwise, the previous year's budget will automatically take effect.
