United States deports over 2,000 Mexicans to Guatemala

The United States has significantly increased the practice of deporting Mexican nationals to third countries, specifically Guatemala and Honduras. According to Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo, approximately 2,284 Mexicans have been sent to Guatemala so far in 2026. These individuals arrive on flights used for Guatemalan repatriates and are treated as transit passengers, being transferred back to Mexico via bus within 24 hours of arrival.

The costs for these transit operations are reportedly covered by either the Mexican or U.S. governments. While the U.S. Department of State has reaffirmed its commitment to the Trump administration's immigration policies, the Mexican government has formally expressed its opposition to this practice, stating that it is working to ensure the direct repatriation of its citizens.

Immigration experts suggest this shift in policy aims to deter illegal reentry by moving deportees further from the U.S.-Mexico border. This marks a departure from previous practices where Mexican deportees were almost exclusively returned directly to Mexico by air or land.
