Guatemala relocates torch-lighting ceremonies from Plaza El Obelisco

Guatemala's Plaza El Obelisco remained empty of its traditional torch-lighting ceremonies this September 14. Since 1959, the monument to Los Próceres has served as the primary starting point for the patriotic torch lighting.

Following disturbances, fights, and vandalism involving participants during last year's celebrations, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Departmental Government decided to relocate the event. To prevent large crowds and potential violence, the torch-lighting activities were moved to five alternative locations: Parque Erick Barrondo (Zone 7), Campos del Roosevelt (Zone 11), Campo Marte (Zone 5), the Guatemala City Municipality (Zone 1), and the Alcaldía Auxiliar in Los Álamos (Zone 18). Authorities maintain a presence to ensure the safety of those participating in the tradition, which commemorates the riders who carried news of independence across the territory in 1821.
