Guatemala reshuffles police leadership amid security crisis

Guatemala's Ministry of the Interior has announced a major restructuring of the National Civil Police (PNC) following the assassination of anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa on October 17. As part of this reorganization, Director General David Custodio Boteo and Deputy Director of Operations Esvin Jacinto Quiché have been dismissed.

Erick Rolando Osoy López has been appointed as the new Director General of the PNC, and Selvin Solano Galicia has been named the new Deputy Director of Operations. Minister of the Interior Marco Antonio Villeda stated that these changes are part of a broader institutional evaluation to strengthen criminal investigation, intelligence, and operational response.

The leadership changes follow a scandal involving the irregular arrest of the Choc Toz brothers, during which seven police officers were detained for allegedly planting a weapon to falsely link the brothers to the Solórzano Foppa homicide. President Bernardo Arévalo has emphasized that strengthening the state's capacity to combat organized crime and drug trafficking remains a government priority.

In a separate incident in Quiché, residents of Camanchaj, Chichicastenango, detained approximately 30 prosecutors from the Public Ministry and police officers following a contraband seizure operation. The community is demanding the return of seized goods and the release of two individuals.
