Guatemala reports 14% increase in arrests through August 2026

Guatemalan security forces reported a significant increase in criminal activity and enforcement actions through August 2026. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, authorities recorded 33,505 arrests between January and August, representing a 14.49% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Weapon seizures also rose by nearly 35%, with 3,369 firearms confiscated. The National Civil Police (PNC) reported arresting over 1,000 individuals linked to extortion, including members of the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs. Additionally, authorities have seen an uptick in the recovery of stolen motorcycles and vehicles.

During recent independence holiday celebrations, police conducted operations that resulted in several arrests for public disturbances and driving under the influence. These operations also led to the seizure of 16 firearms and various vehicles, as part of ongoing coordinated efforts between the police and the military to maintain public order.
