Guatemala: Threats against lawyer Edgar Ortiz spark international concern
Guatemalan lawyer and political analyst Edgar Ortiz, founder of the civil association Poder Ciudadano, has reported being the victim of persistent surveillance and threats. Ortiz stated that he has documented evidence of individuals following him and taking photographs to track his real-time location. Due to these security concerns, he has been forced to cancel scheduled events, including a citizen congress originally set for October 31.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the actions as “cowardly,” stating that Guatemala cannot return to a state where defending democracy costs peace, liberty, or life. The President noted that the Minister of the Interior is coordinating necessary security measures for Ortiz and his wife, Marjorie von Ahn Scheel, who has also faced threats.
The United States Embassy in Guatemala issued a statement describing the reports of intimidation against Poder Ciudadano as “extremely alarming.” The embassy emphasized the importance of protecting the rule of law and stated that the U.S. stands with Guatemala against those who use fear to threaten democracy and perpetuate impunity.
