Guatemala: Deputy Julio Portillo and three police officers killed in Zacapa ambush

Guatemalan deputy Julio César Portillo Paz died following an armed attack on his convoy in Río Hondo, Zacapa. The ambush, which occurred at kilometer 137 of the Atlantic route, also resulted in the deaths of three National Civil Police (PNC) agents: Jorge Paau Xicol, Erick Armides Ramos Osorio, and Fernando Reyes Aldana.

Reports indicate the deceased included two officers on a motorcycle and one member of the deputy’s personal security detail. Portillo, a member of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) party, was transported to a medical center after being struck by glass shards from the vehicle's windshield, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The Congress of Guatemala issued a statement mourning his passing.

The Ministry of the Interior confirmed the attack was carried out by unidentified individuals and noted that the police officers died while attempting to repel the assault to protect the legislator. Authorities are investigating the motive, amid concerns regarding organized crime and drug trafficking in the Zacapa region.
