Guatemala volcanic lahars triggered by heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall in Guatemala has triggered the descent of lahars within the Santa María-Santiaguito volcanic complex. According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) and Insivumeh, the rain is mobilizing accumulated ash, rocks, logs, and other debris through volcanic ravines and riverbeds.

These flows, described as weak to moderate, have been recorded in the Nimá I and Tambor rivers, which are tributaries of the Samalá River. The debris can include rock blocks up to one meter in diameter. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely due to the risk of sudden increases in water levels and potential landslides in mountainous areas.

Conred has issued warnings regarding potential disruptions to the CA-2 Occidente highway, specifically near the Castillo Armas bridge and Vuelta del Niño. The population is advised to avoid crossing rivers or ravines during these events and to follow all official instructions from local authorities.
