Guatemalan authorities urged to investigate María Fernanda Bonilla's medical transfers

The advocacy group 'Justicia por Melisa Palacios' is calling for transparency and investigation into the medical transfers of María Fernanda Bonilla, the primary suspect in the death of Melisa Palacios. While acknowledging that incarcerated individuals have a right to medical care, the group expressed concern that such permissions may be used to evade justice or secure unjustified privileges.

The group reported several alleged irregularities during Bonilla's time at the Los Jocotes prison in Zacapa. These include claims that she left the facility for purported medical appointments without prior judicial orders, only notifying the Judicial Branch (OJ) afterward. Specific allegations include Bonilla attending a funeral in 2024 and visiting shopping centers in Guatemala City under the guise of medical necessity.

Bonilla is currently held at the Matamoros Preventive Center. Her recent transfer to a private medical facility was authorized by the First Criminal Court of High Risk 'C' following a recommendation from the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) regarding renal issues. The advocacy group has urged the OJ, the prison system, and private medical professionals to ensure all documentation and transfers strictly adhere to legal protocols.
