Guatemalan-born Korean man to enlist in South Korean military

Kim Min-woo (Andres), born and raised in Guatemala, has decided to fulfill his military service in South Korea to better understand his father's heritage and learn Korean language and culture. The 2002-born young man, the youngest of four children born to a Korean father and a former Guatemalan member of parliament, traveled to South Korea with his father, Kim Dong-jun.

During their visit to Sokcho, the family explored their roots, including visiting the Chilseong Shipyard where Kim Min-woo's grandfather previously worked. The visit also included a meeting with Sokcho Mayor Lee Byeong-seon, who shares a long-standing connection with Kim Dong-jun dating back to their time in Guatemala.

Following a military service examination, Kim Min-woo has been designated for active duty and is scheduled to enlist in the South Korean military on November 2.
