Guatemalan Navy rescues five Nicaraguan fishermen after 22 days adrift
Five Nicaraguan fishermen have been rescued after spending 22 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. The crew, traveling aboard the vessel Elying Alexander, had been missing since September 12.
The vessel departed from the San Rafael del Sur area in Nicaragua for artisanal fishing when a mechanical engine failure, combined with ocean currents, caused the boat to drift north. The crew survived the three-week ordeal with minimal food and water rations while exposed to varying temperatures and solar radiation.
The Guatemalan Navy's Pacific Naval Command located the boat during routine patrols near the coast of Tecojate, Escuintla, approximately 273 kilometers from the Guatemalan shore. Following the rescue, the crew members are being transferred to land to undergo medical assessments and legal procedures in coordination with national and international authorities.
