Guatemalan transport operators protest fuel prices and extortion

Transport operators from Sacatepéquez, including members of Transportes Terrestres Antigua S.A., have organized a mobilization toward Guatemala City to protest several economic and security issues.

A caravan of approximately 50 buses departed from Antigua Guatemala, traveling via the Inter-American Highway and Roosevelt Avenue toward the Congress of the Republic. Simultaneously, transport units from various municipalities, including Chimaltenango, Ciudad Vieja, Santa María de Jesús, and Jocotenango, have been scheduled to circulate within the Sacatepéquez department.

The protesters are demanding action regarding rising fuel prices, the impact of increased passenger fares, and the rising cost of basic goods. A primary driver for the demonstration is the perceived lack of effectiveness by authorities—specifically the Ministry of the Interior, the Public Ministry, and the Penitentiary System—in curbing systematic extortion and national insecurity. Organizers have stated the protests are intended to be peaceful and aim not to obstruct major roads or avenues.
