Colombia's Contraloría General election draws ten candidates
The Colombian Congress has begun the selection process for the next Contraloría General, the chief fiscal watchdog, for the 2026‑2030 term. Ten candidates—Luis Enrique Abadía García, Andrés Castro Franco, Jorge Eliécer Laverde Vargas, Ana Elena Monsalvo Herrera, Carlos Mario Zuluaga Pardo, Julián Mauricio Ruiz Rodríguez, Diana Carolina Torres García, Amanda Madrid Panesso, Karol González Mora and Rosalba Jazmín Cabrales Romero—are facing public hearings in both the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate.
The final vote is scheduled for 12 August 2026. Political dynamics are intense: the Conservative Party backs Carlos Mario Zuluaga, who previously served as vice‑contralor and interim contralor from June 2023 to June 2024, while other parties support different candidates. Judicial petitions have been filed seeking to alter the shortlist, but no court order has yet changed the list.
