Guatemala's Constitutional Court denounces threats against President Annabella Morfín

The Guatemalan Constitutional Court (CC) publicly condemned recent threats and acts of aggression targeting its president, Annabella Morfín, and other magistrates. In a statement posted to its social media channels, the court expressed "deep concern" and urged citizens, public and private actors to act within a framework of respect, legality and democratic dialogue, rejecting any form of intimidation.

The denunciation comes amid heightened tension over the ongoing process to select a new Attorney General. Ricardo Méndez Ruiz, head of the Foundation against Terrorism, alleged that the court failed to schedule more than ten amparo petitions related to the appointment and accused Morfín of playing a "dangerous game" by allegedly refusing to bring certain cases before the full court. The CC reaffirmed its constitutional mandate as a court of private jurisdiction tasked with defending the constitutional order and pledged to continue its functions in accordance with the law.
