Guatemala's MEM reports oil pipeline theft attempt at Campo Xan
The Guatemalan Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) reported an attempted theft and sabotage of an oil pipeline at the Campo Xan field in Petén. The incident, involving the manipulation of a well's piping, resulted in a spill of oil remnants and a chemical solution used to prevent the deterioration of metal surfaces.
In response, emergency and environmental contingency protocols were activated. Authorities successfully sealed the affected pipes to stop the flow and mitigate further dispersion. Cleanup efforts in the affected area have been coordinated for immediate execution.
The MEM issued a warning regarding the dangers of handling petroleum infrastructure without specialized training, noting that the pipes can contain toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and hazardous chemical inhibitors.
Campo Xan has been under state control since August 13, 2025, following the expiration of the operating contract previously held by Perenco Guatemala.
