Guatemala's New Attorney General Closes Anti‑Impunity Prosecutor Office

Gabriel García Luna assumed the role of Guatemala's Attorney General and head of the Public Ministry on 17 May 2026. In his first press conference he ordered the immediate shutdown of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Impunity (FECI), stating that the unit had lost legitimacy after being used for political persecution. He pledged a review of pending cases and a restructuring of the ministry to restore independence and credibility.

Alongside the closure, Secretary General Ángel Pineda and Sub‑Secretary General Julia María Juárez resigned, with Pineda’s departure marking a broader purge of officials linked to former chief María Consuelo Porras. García Luna appointed Esvin Santiago Chavajay as the new Secretary General. The changes signal a break from the previous administration and raise questions about the future of anti‑corruption investigations in Guatemala.
