Guatemala's Public Ministry advances liquidation of FECI

The Guatemalan Public Ministry (MP) is advancing the liquidation process of the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity (FECI). This follows an announcement four months ago by Attorney General Gabriel García Luna to close the unit due to a perceived loss of public credibility.

Edwin Santiago Chavajay, the MP's Secretary General, stated that an initial audit has been launched as a preliminary step toward the formal suppression of the office. This audit includes a comprehensive review of case files, personnel, and physical assets. The process aims to determine the fate of various components of the unit before its official disappearance through internal regulations.

The FECI was previously led by Rafael Curruchiche. The current administration's decision to dissolve the unit comes after García Luna noted that the office was not fulfilling its intended functions. While the liquidation is underway, a specific date for the final conclusion of the process has not yet been established.
