Guatemala's Universidad de San Carlos hit by student record loss scandal and prosecutor probe

The Registro y Estadística department of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) reported that 40‑50 student academic files disappeared after the 2023 occupation of the central campus. The department says the loss is part of an extraordinary restoration process begun in 2023 to rebuild physical records and that no academic rights, grades or certifications are being revoked.

Legal experts say the new Public Prosecutor, Gabriel García, must now investigate alleged fraud by USAC rector Walter Mazariegos and members of the university’s Superior Council, including accusations of illegal election practices and the arbitrary deletion of student records. Critics argue that the previous attorney general, Consuelo Porras, shielded the rector, and indigenous and civil‑society groups have called the rector’s re‑election illegitimate. Government officials have expressed concern over the university’s autonomy and the protection of students’ rights.
