Guatemala's USAC rector re‑election deepens Constitutional Court split

The Constitutional Court of Guatemala examined several petitions contesting the re‑election of Walter Mazariegos as rector of the Universidad de San Carlos (USAC). Mazariegos began his second term on 1 July 2026, but opponents allege procedural irregularities in the university’s electoral process.

During the court session, three of the five magistrates voted against the proposed resolutions, preventing the court from moving to a substantive review of the challenges. The judges cited procedural deficiencies, such as lack of standing and the need to exhaust ordinary legal avenues, postponing any decisive ruling on the matter.

The division within the court underscores ongoing disputes over the legality of Mazariegos’s assumption of office and raises broader concerns about rule‑of‑law, institutional credibility, and the consistency of legal application in Guatemala.
