The dry forest of Colimes in the Guayas province of Ecuador is experiencing an early mass blooming of yellow guayacán trees (Tabebuia chrysantha). Driven by the El Niño phenomenon, the flowering has occurred approximately three and a half months ahead of its usual schedule, which typically falls between late December and early January.
Unseasonal rainfall during the first week of September increased humidity levels and stimulated the buds. The peak flowering intensity was observed between September 11 and September 13, creating a golden landscape of centennial trees that can reach heights of 20 meters.
The unexpected phenomenon has triggered a spontaneous tourism season. Hacienda Las Habras has opened its doors to visitors through September 20, offering activities such as hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, and local gastronomy. Entry fees are set at USD 3 for adults and USD 1.50 for children and seniors.
