Guayaquil expands planned bicycle lane network to 39 kilometers

The first phase of a bicycle lane project in Guayaquil has concluded its feasibility design stage. The new plan defines a 39-kilometer network across the northern and central sectors of the city, significantly expanding the initial 17-kilometer proposal.

The route will cover areas such as Miraflores, Urdesa, and La Kennedy, connecting approximately 11 universities, student residential zones, shopping centers, and public spaces. This expansion follows origin-destination surveys that identified higher demand areas. According to local officials, 72% of surveyed citizens expressed interest in the infrastructure, provided that safety and quality standards are met.

The design aims to integrate new routes with the existing, underutilized bicycle network to improve overall functionality. The study results have been submitted to the General Directorate of Public Works, the Transit and Mobility Authority (ATM), and other municipal entities for phased implementation. Phase 2, which includes areas in both the north and south of the city, is currently in the process of reviewing contract offers.
