Guayaquil faces surge in violent crime and gang-related shootings
Guayaquil continues to face high levels of violent crime, marked by several recent targeted attacks and shootings. In the Monte Sinaí sector, four armed individuals broke into a home, killing a 16-year-old girl and her stepfather, while leaving the mother seriously injured. This incident contributes to a rising death toll in the Nueva Prosperina district, which has recorded 197 murders between January 1 and August 21.
In other parts of the city, violence remains prevalent. A 20-year-old tricycle driver was shot by a former schoolmate after refusing to provide a ride; the victim identified the assailant as being linked to the organized crime group Los Tiguerones. Additionally, in the Portete district, gunmen on a motorcycle attacked a group of men socializing, resulting in one death and one injury. This attack brought the district's violent death count to 179 for the year.
