Guayaquil implements parking meters amid regional shortages

The Guayaquil Municipality has approved an ordinance to install parking meters in the city center to improve vehicle rotation in high-demand areas. The initial phase will target approximately 1,500 spaces within a central polygon bounded by Loja, Olmedo, Malecón, and Boyacá streets. The regulation sets a rate of $1 per hour with a maximum limit of four hours and includes a five-minute grace period.

Studies conducted for the project indicate that roughly 149,000 vehicles move toward the center of Guayaquil, with specific high-traffic areas like Boyacá and Malecón seeing significant vehicle density. Current data shows an average parking occupancy rate of 93.60% in analyzed zones.

In the neighboring area of Samborondón, residents and visitors face significant challenges regarding parking availability near commercial hubs like Village and Riocentro. Critics point to a lack of municipal planning, noting that the approval of high-density medical towers and commercial complexes has not been matched by requirements for adequate customer parking, leading to congestion and informal parking practices.
