Guayaquil investigation sought in death of Jancarlo Coello

The death of 33-year-old Jancarlo Coello in Guayaquil has prompted calls from the Runa Sipiy Observatory for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and subsequent discovery of the body.

Coello was last seen leaving an apartment in the Urdesa neighborhood around 01:00. His body was later found in a morgue, with an initial version placing the time of death around 03:40 on Benjamín Carrión Avenue in northern Guayaquil. Three primary hypotheses have emerged: a possible hit-and-run accident, a potential robbery, and possible exposure to escopolamine.

The Runa Sipiy Observatory has urged the Prosecutor's Office to reconstruct the full timeline using surveillance footage, testimonies, communications, and forensic evidence. The organization emphasizes that even if an autopsy reveals injuries consistent with a traffic accident, investigators must determine if prior actions—such as an assault or the non-consensual administration of substances—contributed to the victim's state of vulnerability or disorientation.
