Guayaquil marks 491st founding anniversary with parade and boxing tournament
Guayaquil celebrated its 491st foundation on July 25 with a traditional parade of six colorful floats that traveled the Avenida 9 de Octubre from Parque Centenario to Calle Chile. Thousands of residents and visitors lined the streets, which were decorated in the city’s sky‑blue and white colors, enjoying music, dance and cultural displays under sunny weather.
The festivities also featured the Copa Guayas boxing championship, the final of a tournament that drew about 200 athletes aged 9 to 40 from more than 15 local academies. Forty final bouts were held under Olympic‑style rules across several age categories, overseen by judges and a central referee. The event was organized by the Dirección de Vinculación con la Comunidad together with the Asociación Provincial de Boxeo del Guayas, with medical support from the Dirección de Salud.
