Guayaquil municipality launches youth drug prevention program

Approximately 200 students from the Jean Piaget Educational Unit in Guayaquil participated in a session of the ‘Ruta de la Juventud’ (Youth Route) program. Organized by the Municipality of Guayaquil through its Health Directorate, the initiative aims to provide adolescents with tools to prevent drug and alcohol consumption while promoting mental health awareness.

The program utilized interactive activities, including choreography, question-and-answer games, and participatory dynamics to engage students. Participants were educated on the myths and truths regarding substance use to help them make responsible decisions. Additionally, the sessions provided guidance on recognizing signs of depression and the importance of supporting peers facing mental health challenges.

Andrés Santos, the Director of Health for the Municipality of Guayaquil, emphasized that prevention must be a sustained, coordinated effort involving authorities, teachers, and parents across various community settings such as neighborhoods and schools.
