Guayaquil police officer in critical condition after shooting

A police officer in Guayaquil, Ecuador, remains in critical condition following a shooting on September 11, 2026, in the Sergio Toral cooperative. The officer was traveling in a patrol car during a pursuit of two individuals on a motorcycle when suspects opened fire, striking the vehicle and hitting the officer in the head.

Commander Walter Villarroel confirmed that the officer underwent surgery to remove a projectile lodged in the brain. While the officer was stabilized at Hospital General Monte Sinaí before being transferred for specialized care, his condition remains critical. Authorities have identified two suspects on a motorcycle and have apprehended more than 11 people during subsequent raids.
