Guayaquil preserves historic Club de la Unión as cultural center

The Municipality of Guayaquil has intervened to rescue the former headquarters of the Club de la Unión, preventing the historic building from being sold for private commercial use such as a hotel or warehouse. The site has been transformed into the Centro Cultural Olmedo, a public space dedicated to art, education, and community engagement.

Located strategically in the city center with views of the Guayas River, the facility now offers diverse spaces including a permanent art room, a library, and halls capable of hosting up to 500 attendees for seminars and congresses. Mayor Aquiles Alvarez noted that the initiative aims to provide open spaces for citizens, turning a previously private property into a communal asset for the people of Guayaquil.
