Guayaquil Region Hit by Magnitude 4.3 Earthquake, No Damage Reported

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the Guayaquil area of Ecuador on the night of 26 July 2026. The epicenter was located about 9.6 km from the city of Durán, within the contact zone of the Nazca and South American plates at roughly 60 km depth. The tremor was felt across 17 cantons in the provinces of Guayas, Bolívar and Los Ríos, with moderate shaking reported in Guayaquil, Durán, Samborondón, Nobol and Pedro Carbo, while other locations experienced only light intensity.

The Ecuadorian National Risk Management Secretariat confirmed no injuries or material damage. Instituto Geofísico director Mario Ruiz explained that such shallow‑to‑intermediate depth events typically dissipate energy before reaching the surface, reducing the risk of serious effects.

Authorities continue to monitor the area, but officials note that similar low‑magnitude quakes have been recorded in recent years without generating significant impacts.
