Guayaquil: Two workers die in sanitary truck cistern accident

Two workers died on Saturday afternoon, October 17, 2026, following an incident inside the cistern of a sanitary services truck in the Vergeles sector of northern Guayaquil.

The Guayaquil Fire Department reported that three workers were inside the cistern when the accident occurred. By the time emergency responders arrived, a coworker had already extracted the three individuals, who were found unconscious. Despite resuscitation efforts by paramedics, two workers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third worker was successfully resuscitated and transported to a medical facility for specialized care. A fourth employee was also evaluated by medical personnel and transferred to a nearby hospital for observation.

The emergency response included two combat units, a rescue unit, a ladder truck, and three ambulances. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the incident, and investigations are expected to establish the circumstances and potential responsibilities.
