Guayaquil's Malecón 2000 faces management and economic challenges
The Malecón 2000 area in Guayaquil features a diverse array of street performers, including musicians, photographers, caricaturists, and living statues. According to Cidinha de Weber, Marketing and Communication Manager of the Fundación Malecón 2000, approximately 50 artists are included in a monthly cultural agenda. To participate, artists must undergo a selection process managed by the production department, providing identification and professional references.
However, the area faces challenges regarding municipal management and business stability. Reports indicate that some local businesses have experienced significant declines, with sales dropping by as much as 70% in certain sectors due to unplanned events and poor logistical control. Concerns have been raised regarding urban maintenance, such as inadequate street lighting and ineffective road closures that impact regular customers, contributing to a sense of neglect in parts of the city's public spaces.
