Guayaquil's Malecón 2000 opens outdoor mural gallery for city’s 491st anniversary

The Malecón 2000 promenade in Guayaquil, Ecuador, was transformed on 22 May into an open‑air gallery titled “El corazón de Guayaquil.” The exhibition features 20 murals, each about 3.6 × 3 metres, created by 25 local artists from the collective La Piel se Viste de Color and students of the ZUMAR Community Arts Center, under the direction of Marco Martínez.

Organized by the municipal government and the Fundación Malecón 2000, the event marks the 491st anniversary of Guayaquil’s foundation. Officials, including councilor Juanita Montero Pinargote and Fundación manager Víctor Mieles Cabal, attended the inauguration, which also presented performances honoring Julio Jaramillo and involved the Naval Academy’s Pelotón Comando. Martínez emphasized that the murals aim to heal social trauma, strengthen community ties, and provide new artistic opportunities for children and youths.

The organizers anticipate up to 300 000 visitors during the holiday period, hoping the display will boost public engagement with community‑based art and reinforce the city’s cultural identity.
