Guayaramerín authorities investigate jaguar biocidio and wildlife trafficking
Authorities in Guayaramerín, Beni, have launched a criminal investigation following the death of a jaguar (Panthera onca), a protected and threatened species. The incident occurred on August 8, 2026, after a video circulated on social media showing several individuals firing weapons at the animal in a residential area.
Reports indicate the jaguar was shot, decapitated, and mutilated. Investigators recovered the animal's skin, paws, and claws, suggesting potential intent to traffic wildlife parts. The Ministerio Público has identified suspects, including Walter A. and Andy S. C., and has issued arrest warrants. The suspects face multiple charges, including biocidio (killing of wildlife), illegal possession of firearms, wildlife trafficking, and the commercialization of animal parts.
The investigation is being conducted by the Beni Departmental Prosecutor's Office in coordination with the Forest and Environmental Protection Police (POFOMA). While some local residents claimed the actions were taken in self-defense due to the animal's presence in a neighborhood, prosecutors are working to establish individual responsibilities and determine the exact circumstances of the killing under Bolivia's Law 700, which protects animals against cruelty and mistreatment.
