Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson extends VfL Gummersbach contract until 2029

VfL Gummersbach has announced that head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club until 2029. Originally set to expire in the summer of 2027, the new agreement adds two additional years to his tenure.

Sigurdsson, an Icelandic former left winger, took over the coaching role in 2020 following the end of his playing career. Since then, he has overseen the club's promotion from the second division back to the Bundesliga in 2022. Under his leadership, the team has grown into a competitive force in the league, recently securing a fourth-place finish.

Club CEO Christoph Schindler described the extension as a “real exclamation mark,” noting that Sigurdsson has earned an excellent reputation beyond Gummersbach and has been the subject of interest from other major European clubs. Sigurdsson expressed gratitude for the club's trust, stating that he feels their shared journey is far from complete.
