Guelph mayor reports massive disruption during University homecoming

The University of Guelph homecoming celebrations resulted in significant public safety concerns, with Mayor Cam Guthrie describing the event as the “worst” in the city's history. Thousands of young people gathered near Stone Road Mall and Chancellors Way, creating a crowd significantly larger than in previous years.

Police reported multiple incidents, including people climbing buildings, objects being thrown at emergency responders, shoplifting, and vandalism. Local businesses reported property damage, such as smashed windows, and the community faced issues with fires, excessive waste, and transit disruptions. While no serious injuries were reported, emergency services treated several individuals for cuts, lacerations, and intoxication-related medical calls.

Guelph Police have laid several criminal and provincial offence charges, including causing a disturbance and various alcohol-related offences. The Mayor expressed concern regarding the financial impact on taxpayers and the safety of residents and emergency personnel.
