Guernsey doctor leaks sensitive medical data during phone call
A doctor in Guernsey inadvertently disclosed sensitive medical information and identifying details to data thieves during a phone call. The incident occurred while the physician was attending to a patient, as the caller was not the intended patient but individuals seeking to steal data.
The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) highlighted the incident in its report regarding data violations in Guernsey for the second quarter of 2026. Data protection commissioner Brent Homan noted that such violations are not limited to physical records but include conversations that are secretly overheard.
The healthcare facility involved has reminded the physician of their data protection obligations and has organized additional training for staff. The ODPA has recommended that training be provided to all new personnel and updated annually to mitigate similar risks.
Between April and June 2026, the ODPA received 49 reports of data violations, four of which were classified as high risk. The most frequent type of violation reported was the accidental sending of emails to the wrong recipient.
